We didn't do too much because Shane is now writing a book. Can you believe it!!! But this will make more sense. It is a book about Utah Football!!! A book company is writing a book about a lot of colleges' football programs. Some guys up at the U recommended Shane. What were they thinking? Just kidding.

We did take one day for Houston and the Houston zoo. Our kids weren't that impressed.
Reason #1
It was very very crowded.
Reason #2
"There are no gorillas!" Jaylen
Reason #3
"There are no penguins!" Kate
Reason #4
Some of my kids think they are too old for a zoo. (Connor) But he was a very good sport. He always is.
But we had fun. Why? Because we were with each other.

TEXAS BLUEBONNETS
On the way home we found a beautiful field of Bluebonnets. They were everywhere. It was gorgeous. I hope this weather lasts forever. We don't know what we are getting into because we weren't living here last year at this time. The weather is absolutely perfect right now, but we keep thinking - "How long will this last?" I hope for a long long time. We do not want the heat like we moved into last July quite yet.

That is just unbelievable!

Cute kids with cute flowers.

Christmas Card 2008

We are sending Christmas Cards and are gladly accepting Christmas Cards but. . . . we have a problem. Amy was going to send Christmas cards early so that everyone would have our address. I WILL get on the ball. 2009 is the year of great organization and the end of procrastination. Procrastination ends - organization begins! But, that doesn't solve this problem. If anyone still reads this blog. You WILL get a card. But please send us one soon, we are very very lonely.

Hinckleys

2143 Rockcliffe Loop

College Station TX 77845.

Here is our pic for our card that is coming. He must have looked completely different from himself.

Hinckley Halloween

We barely got the pumpkin carving in. We ended up buying and carving the pumpkins on the day before Halloween (Thursday). We had fun and Connor still was willing to carve with us. I don't know how long that will last. But he's a pretty good kid so we might be lucky enough to have him always willing to be with his family. If you will notice Connor is not wearing any BRACES! He got them off the day before. It has been a total of 2 whole years that he has worn those. He got them put on Halloween day two years prior and we definitely celebrated this milestone.

A Texas learning experience: The Halloween pumpkins were carved on Thursday. On Sunday (only two days later) Jaylen pulled the lid off one and the whole entire pumpkin was full of white fluffy mold. It looked like a spider's den. The other two looked exactly the same way. Ain't humidity grand!!!

Texas Football

Last week I was fortunate enough to spend three days on the campus of the University of Texas. I toured their facilities and spent most of my time in the new suites built in the north end zone. This weekend I was able to watch the Miami Hurricanes play Texas A&M at Kyle Field in College Station, TX. If those five days aren't football heaven I'm not sure what is. To go along with the photos here are some interesting facts.

University of Texas = 48,000 students
Texas A&M University = 48,000 students

Royal Stadium = Seats 97,000
Kyle Field = Seats 82,000

Between the two schools they have 5 national championships and 3 Heisman Trophies. The Longhorn football facility was simply amazing. The video board is the second largest in the world...talk about your big screen TV.

<img style="float:center; Really Shane hopes we have got it in the right place because he is tired of moving it. Oh well, these are important decisions. Now comes the part where we have to start making holes in the walls and make things more permanent. I dread putting up pictures because I never feel I am putting them in a place Martha Stewart would approve. Please comment with advice. If you see an empty wall tell me what needs to go there. Shane and Connor love having a TV on the wall. I have to admit I like watching TV while I am slaving away in the kitchen. But I'm afraid we lost any hopes of looking like intellectuals that abhor TV watching. Oh well. Kate was my official model. See if you can spot Hank in any pictures. Instead of Where's Waldo it's Where's Hank.

Another Week in Texas

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLtk5AQg45I/AAAAAAAAAEY/tQI5SbdSUHI/s200/IMG00201.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240893521860289426" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLtk5MyJRPI/AAAAAAAAAEg/8J4K-WxTskg/s200/IMG00205.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240893525222573298" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLtk5dPwELI/AAAAAAAAAEo/pXvYvimpJ2o/s200/IMG_0193.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240893529641717938" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLtk5p0WUqI/AAAAAAAAAEw/0AkOov9nt2g/s200/IMG_0238.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240893533016445602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLtk50WzJPI/AAAAAAAAAE4/_au_TJknbPs/s200/IMG_0199.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5240893535845295346" />
Well the first week of school is over. The weekend included Connor's first marching band performance in Round Rock, A trip to Houston for soccer games, watching the Utes win on TV and seeing Texas A&M lose in person. A few of the pictures are from Kyle Field. It truly is one of the places you must experience if you are a college football fan. Connor might look like an Aggie fan but he just wore the colors so we wouldn't be killed wearing our Ute red to the game. The other pictures show Amy and Jaylen washing Hank, Kate doing Karaoke on the tramp to Hannah Montana and Jaylen at a soccer game.

Time to Breathe?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLTWpcYCG3I/AAAAAAAAADw/9h9g8iJIjlk/s200/DSCF0589.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239048274018704242" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLTWpubsCsI/AAAAAAAAAD4/KpkSahWKVNg/s200/Summer+2008+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239048278865873602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLTWp5JPUWI/AAAAAAAAAEA/ND2q3VcfgkI/s200/DSCF0595.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239048281741283682" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLTWqKatf0I/AAAAAAAAAEI/a_mA_jDyAtc/s200/Summer+2008+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239048286377967426" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SLTWqsEY9CI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/6rrjIudh_z4/s200/Summer+2008+016.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239048295411151906" />
It has been absolutely nuts! I would love to post more often but it seems I never have time. This might be a little long but I'll try to catch everyone up to speed.

Hot, Hot, Hot and more Hot! It saps your energy, makes you stay inside, keeps your AC on max in the car all the time. You always sweat, want something to drink, and complain about the heat. I'm sure that will excite many of the people who SAY they want to visit.

We moved into the house just fine. Amy and the kids unloaded over 350 boxes in about two weeks. It took Shane five weeks to unload 8 boxes. The highlight of our move in was the four inch scorpion that crawled out of the master bath drain.

Getting ready for school has been a chore. Amy has registered our three kids for school six times. That includes the three times they lost or messed up our paperwork. Jaylen has PE this year and had to have a white shirt and maroon shorts. Of course everyone else knew this but the Hinckleys. When we went to the five stores in town that carry athletic shorts, guess what? No maroon! We finally found a pair of women's shorts in the return rack at the campus bookstore and saved the day at the last minute. There are more rules down here than you can shake a stick at. They say the TEXAS PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE every morning and then the regular pledge of alegiance. The younger kids don't get to leave school when the bell sounds. They must line up in the "pick up" or "walking" lines and then proceed orderly out of school. The kids all say "Yes Mam or Yes Sir". They all look you in the eye when you speak to them as well. After dealing with the Utah kids for the past nine years, it is a little unnerving when a 5 year old looks you straight in the eye, listens to everything you say and then answers you in clear and precise sentences ending with Mam or Sir.

Connor's life is hetic. A typical day for him is as follows

5:45 am - get up, get ready for the day
6:30 am - leave for marching band or seminary
7:45 am - Arrive at school do last minute homework
8:20 am - Start School
3:45 pm - School is out, go to unsupervised basketball practice (Informal but required by coach)
5:30 pm - Arrive home, grab a bite
6:00 pm - Arrive at church for seminary home study (due to missing class because of band,)attends evening band practice or has trombone lessons depending on the day
7:00 pm - Attend Youth Church Night, pick up basketball with the school team or still at band practice depending on the night
8:30 - 9:00 pm - Arrive home, complete 2 - 3 hours of homework
11:30 pm - In bed and start all over again.

On top of all that Connor is on Student Council, Does WEEKLY fundraisers to pay for band expenses, Attends Texas A&M football games and performs at High School football games.

Amy runs around trying to coordinate three kids and three different schools, soccer, piano lessons, and all the things a Mom does to create a wonderful home.

I just show up and do what I'm told (hahaha don't kill me Amy).

Overall the kids miss their extended family and friends something fierce. We read your blogs, hope for e-mails, and generally comfort each other knowing that we have people who love us all over the country. I've posted a few pictures but they are not of any special significance to the blog. Just stuff that the family did while they were in transition between Utah and Texas over the summer.

Amarillo and Six Flags

 We stopped in Amarillo, our old digs, and saw our old house that Connor and Jaylen lived in. The next day we headed off to Six Flags over Texas. We had an awesome time but it sure was hot. We rode every roller coaster known to man, and then did it again. No one was scared and we went several times. The TITAN is AWESOME. You have to ride it to understand. I've never been that scared or had as much fun as I did on that roller coaster. When we were hot, we would go to a ride called Aquaman. The video shows a walkway where we could stand while the ride came hurtling down an incline and created this huge wave. Connor shot the video while Jaylen, Kate and Dad got soaked.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v23.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3Ddd5738e5715dc9ad%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331249841%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D4D950ABD1F26C31349559FABD10BD90086BB0C1B.120303F1673059573EC930AD308A5498DCD8D524%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Ddd5738e5715dc9ad%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3De6zzHOi6ylpI2--PLpu3uU0YLBo&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Grand Canyon Update

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SJKMserrl7I/AAAAAAAAADY/0wHDM3iI5E4/s200/DSC00029.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229396813108975538" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZImj91UZr-U/SJKLa5Xu0WI/AAAAAAAAADQ/l5TQtKkS7wA/s200/DSC00018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229395411523785058" />
We took the family through the Grand Canyon on the way from Utah to Texas. What an experience! One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. It was a lot of fun to be with the family again after several weeks of the bachelor life. We had a great day hiking and exploring and hiking and hiking. Dad complained the whole way while Kate wanted to keep going forever.
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v24.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D6edc25785e672468%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331249841%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7B6787569985292232E106F43AAABA6030621826.35181142629BC0156C8553A297FBF2722B85F3E2%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D6edc25785e672468%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DAk_FsNjveFok9jty4VQDb20QIxQ&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Texas BBQ

<img style="cursor:pointer; Now BBQ in Utah usually means putting some KRAFT BBQ suace on the chicken breast you cooked on the grill. Down south BBQ takes on a whole different meaning.

Texas Monthly publishes their top 50 BBQ spots once a year and last week, the list came out. Number one on the list was a small place (4,000 pop) in Lexington, TX called Snow's BBQ. They are only open on Saturday so you have to get there early. We left at 9 in the morning and drove 75 minutes to Lexington from College Station. The line was already out the door at 10:30 in the morning. We waited 30 minutes in line and were next when the owner came up and said, "That's it, we're all sold out today." Our disappointment was high but there was nothing we could do.

Looking at the list of top BBQ places, we noticed that the Town of Taylor was only 30 minutes away. Louie Mueller's BBQ was number 5 on the list. We were hungry, had invested 2 hours of our time and decided another 30 minutes would be worth it. We arrive in Taylor (pop 10,000) and found this old, run down store front with a line coming out the door. We pulled in, waited 30 minutes and we're rewarded with some of the best tasting BBQ I'd ever eaten in my life.

The photos tell the story. Pay attention to the "Man Plate" that had 1/2 lbs brisket, 1 regular sausage, 1 chipolte sausage, slice of cheese and two pieces of bread.

ARE WE SCARED YET?

Fun Farewell at Lagoon

The girls had fun at Lagoon with the Howe's and the Hughes.' Everyone wanted to see a photo of the new house. Nothing to write home about really. Homes were very difficult to find that fit our needs. The crazy thing about this home is that Amy has never seen it. I took video, uploaded it to youtube, then Amy gave the thumbs up or thumbs down. The home has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms with 2 living rooms, a study and a formal dinning room. This might have been the early version of Googlemaps. The pony express could see which town was next before they actually arrived.

In addition to the towns posting their letter, schools started to do the same. The University of Utah has it's U on the mountain put there in 1905. Of course Brigham Young University had to follow suit. In 1906 they set out to put BYU on the mountain but after backbreaking work to get the Y finished, they postponed, then abandoned the project. Now high schools have gotten into the act with letters on the mountain. For a great website on this subject visit Mountain Monograms.

Texas (at least part of Texas) is different. While a few towns in west Texas can boast the letter on the hill (El Paso has at least two), the flat land of east Texas doesn't provide a vehicle for the monograms we love. What do you do in the flatlands? Why build a water tower of course. Not only do you have room for a letter, usually you can put your entire name on the tower. Saying good-bye to some of my best friends from school, and my best friend that I knew since I was little was really hard. But we survied that day and took the four hour trip to grandmas. Our dad has to go down to Texas for the first month of summer and live in a house down there, so he can work and find us a house to live in, while the rest of the family is at grandmas. Our grandma and grandpa live in Wyoming. We are living here untill our dad finds a house, or untill the end of the month. Our dog Hank went with our dad and he is staying at some friends of ours down in Texas. They also have a dog, so Hank will have a friend. So far everything has been going great. I just can't wait untill we can get together as a family in our own house down in Texas.

The Heat of West Texas

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D55461c54ef6d36ca%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331249841%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D410E20980AD1B6C25688CB8D7CB2B432829128B7.1CCCE1600D30513706BC5B6C4E1800A3A6C7A166%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D55461c54ef6d36ca%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DmgPUYR_X0C7YL2JX2UUXGGZ1usQ&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

The tempurature went up to 107 before the day was done. Left Albuquerque in the morning and arrived in College Station, our new home, at 1:00 am. Glad to leave New Mexico. Not sure that I could live there. The drive took me into west Texas where I saw some new things. The wind was blowing and the tempurature reading was 107. Good thing I put Hank in the cab with me. To capture all the wind in west Texas, they've built thousands of giant windmills. Not the old kind you see in farm pictures but the new white ones with 3 bladed propellers that stand 100 feet in the air. Oil wells were pumping everywhere. No wonder they don't have state income tax in Texas. The other thing I saw were dust devils. Now these are common in the plains area of the country but the frequency of these were amazing. About every 1/2 mile a new dust devil would form from the red clay of the west Texas farmland and come whipping accross the highway. I would have to hold on as the truck would vibrate for one to two seconds and then it would pass. It was like being in a mini-tornado.

The First Trip

Well today was the first day on the road. I got off to a late start due to all the wonderful friends and neighbors that came to say goodbye. It was very heartwrenching to see your kids cry as they left friends.

Eventually I got off with our dog Hank. My wife and kids went to grandma's while I live in Texas and look for a house. My drive took me through southern Utah, western Colorado, and into New Mexico where I stopped at Albuquerque for the night.

My drive took me through several Indian reservations but the town of Shiprock caught my attention. It is in the Navajo reservation and is the sight of several books by Tony Hillerman. What struck me was the utter poverty and lack of oversight of their resources. Roads were in terrible condition, almost every sign had graffiti, and the general lack of hope was evident everywhere. I've been in poor, depressed areas before but I've never seen anything on the scale I saw today. One other item that stood out was the amount of roadside memmorials to accident victoms. Drunk Driving alert signs were everywhere and apparantly the bottle has claimed a significant number of lives in this small community. I saw more roadside flowers and crosses in this small town than I had seen in my entire life combined. It was very sad and depressing.

One fun note, Hank and I stopped at Sonic for dinner in Farmington, NM. We ate at the park benches and I found out that Hank loves onion rings. He had almost the entire batch.

Well it's off to bed and then on to College Station tomorrow.

Texas Ditch Surfing

Our research about our new home state produced this interesting clip on water sports in Texas

The Preamble

This is our family's first attempt at a blog. We thought it would be a great way for friends and family to stay in touch as we move to Texas all by our lonesome. If you have stumbled upon this site accidentally, then you should know that there are five of us. Dad, Mom, and three kids (Connor - 15, Jaylen-11, Kate-8). We have lived in Utah for most of our family's existence even though Dad and Mom are from other states. While Utah has it's own quirks, nothing has really prepared us for what we are about to encounter deep in the heart of Texas. This blog is to share those unique experiences and tell about our life in general.
